I have been choking the Internet for 15 years now marketing my business. I have gotten very good at promoting and marketing online. Nothing solidifies that more than what happened to me this week. I was called by the Producer for www.americanmilestones.com TV Show hosted by THE Joan Lunden. Yes, I was more shocked than you! After going to the site and watching other guests such as Colin Powell, George Bush Sr. and many other VERY big names, I went GASP! This is some serious TV. I watched the videos and told myself that I don't think this is a show where I will fit in but let's talk about it anyway. Tuesday I had a phone interview with the Producer. I asked her how she found me and her reply was "we have a research team, they found you". That was a golden moment, and very seldom am I speechless but there I was, speechless. We had a professional and pleasant exchange and while impressed she also did not see me fitting into this shows format. She was very kind and stated that she did see why her team picked me as a potential for the show. I was bummed for about 2 minutes and then I got back to work selling soap.
Let me back track and tell you what I did before this phone interview transpired. As an entrepreneur there is this roller coaster ride I take every day. The highs are really high and the lows can be devastating. The first few years I cried a lot then I got used to being squashed. Once you figure out it's all a numbers game you develop a thick skin and a plan B or you get your ass handed to you on a platter every day. I choose Plan B because I am a survivor. I got up early that day and pitched my story to every major TV network. I may not hear from any of them but that is ok. The preventative measures I took before the interview rejection was softened by my aspirations of bigger fish.
The second thing I did was land phone time with a buyer that can put my products into 100 or more locations. My temporary set back was already in my rear view mirror. My 4:00 sales call to develop a whole new line of products was my plan C for the day. The conversation started out on a downward spiral in the first 5 minutes. These are the moments that separate the sales people from the entrepreneurs. I was not losing 2 battles in one day damn it! I do my best creative thinking under pressure so within 5 minutes and I had created 8 potential products for her and was told just one of them would go into 5 locations right away. SCORE!!!!! Your determination needs preventative care, you see? If I had not set myself up correctly in the morning that phone call interview would have crushed my spirit and the creative energy would have rendered me useless for my sales call. Now that you have read this far you understand I had to trick you with my title because I want you to know, it's mentally hard but you can do it. I am the power of one, you can be the same. Get back to work!
